Thinking about working in sustainability? You’re not alone, and you’re definitely not late. 🌱
As a former Tech-Recruiter, I see more and more companies realizing that doing good for the planet is also good for business. That means green jobs are not just growing, they’re evolving.
But what does working in sustainability actually look like? And where do you even find these roles?
Roles You’ll Commonly Find in Sustainability
Whether you're a data lover, a people person, or a big-picture strategist, there’s a sustainability role for you:
-
Sustainability Analyst / Consultant – crunches numbers, designs strategies, writes reports.
-
ESG Manager – focuses on Environmental, Social, and Governance metrics and compliance.
-
Climate Risk Analyst – assesses environmental risks for investments or operations.
-
Circular Economy Specialist – redesigns systems to reduce waste and improve reuse.
-
Sustainable Supply Chain Manager – ensures products are sourced and shipped responsibly.
-
Environmental Engineer / Scientist – develops tech and solutions to reduce environmental impact.
-
Sustainability Communications / Reporting Officer – makes sure stakeholders (and the public!) know what’s being done.
-
Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) – yes, the big boss of green strategy!
And the list goes on — you’ll also find jobs in education, policy, architecture, agriculture, and more.
Companies Hiring in Sustainability
It’s not just Patagonia and Greenpeace anymore (though yes, they’re awesome). Here are some types of companies looking for sustainability talent:
-
Big corporations: Unilever, IKEA, Google, Microsoft, L’Oréal, and Apple. all have full-on sustainability teams.
-
Sustainability consultancies: Like South Pole, Systemiq, ERM, or Circle Economy.
-
International organizations: United Nations, World Bank, European Commission.
-
Startups: From clean energy to circular packaging — many are hiring!
-
Universities & research institutions: Think tanks and labs need people, too.
Hot tip: even companies that don’t “look” green (like banks or logistics) are hiring sustainability roles. Think strategy, reporting, and ESG integration.
