The Difference a Teacher Makes in Online Learning: Why Some Excel and Others Struggle

Online learning has transformed education, making it more accessible and flexible. But anyone who’s experienced virtual classes knows one thing for sure: not all online teachers are created equal. The quality of the teacher can make or break the entire learning experience.

A Personal Experience

In one of my recent online courses, the teacher really encouraged participation. I made several comments and tried to engage actively. At one point, after I shared what I thought was a valuable insight, he responded with, “That is obvious,” laughing it off. It felt dismissive, and honestly, it was a bit discouraging. Moments like these highlight how important it is for teachers to create an inclusive environment where students feel heard and respected, especially online, where connection is harder to build.

Why Some Online Teachers Shine

Great online teachers excel because they adapt their methods to the digital environment. They engage students actively, use multimedia tools effectively, and foster an interactive community, even if it’s through a screen. These teachers understand that online learning requires more than just delivering lectures; it’s about encouraging participation, providing timely feedback, and creating a supportive space where students feel motivated to learn.

Common Challenges for Less Effective Online Teachers

On the flip side, some teachers struggle with the transition to online formats. They may rely too heavily on slides or monologues, neglecting interaction and student engagement. Others might not be familiar with the digital tools available or fail to create clear communication channels. This often leads to confusion, frustration, and disengagement among students, undermining the potential of online education.

What Students Can Do

As learners, it’s important to recognize these differences and adjust accordingly. If you find yourself in a class with a less engaging teacher, take initiative by forming study groups, asking questions, or using supplementary materials. Also, mirroring your teacher’s communication style can help improve interaction and understanding during online sessions.

Online education will continue to grow, and so will the diversity of teaching styles. The best educators will be those who continuously adapt and innovate, leveraging technology to make learning meaningful and effective. How has your experience been with online teachers?
